Before you leave home
01 / THE BASICS

Pack what you use

Bring comfortable swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes. Add goggles and a swimming cap if you use them or the facility requires them.

02 / THE FACILITY

Check before heading out

Confirm public swimming times, entry arrangements and pool rules with your chosen facility. Ask whether lanes are available for recreational swimming.

03 / THE FINISH

Leave room for afterwards

Pack a bag for wet items and allow time to change. Rinse your equipment according to its care instructions and let it dry between visits.

Sharing the water

A little courtesy
goes a long way.

  1. Check lane signs and ask staff which lane suits your pace.
  2. Follow the swimming direction shown at the pool and give other swimmers space.
  3. When taking a break, keep the turning area clear and follow staff guidance.
About us

Swimming,
without the rush.

Easy Lane is an independent English-language guide to recreational pool swimming for readers in South Africa. We share practical ideas for preparing, taking breaks and enjoying a visit. We are not a swimming school or pool operator, and we do not provide individual coaching.

Good to know

Your visit,
your questions.

What if I am new to swimming?
Arrange lessons with a qualified swimming instructor and use a supervised pool. This page is general reading, not a substitute for learning water skills in person.
Do I need to count lengths?
No. Recreational swimming does not need a distance target. Choose a familiar activity within your ability, take breaks and finish when you feel ready.
How should I choose a pool?
Look for a staffed facility and check its supervision, access arrangements and rules before visiting. Follow the lifeguard's instructions and do not swim alone.
Does this guide cover the ocean?
No. This page focuses on swimming pools. Beaches, rivers and dams have different conditions and require separate local guidance.
